Materials

What makers here print with, family by family, and what is printed in each.

Core FDM filaments

  • PLA
Nothing printed in it here yet

Plant-based, rigid, the easiest to print and the widest colour range. Softens in heat and degrades in UV — indoor use.

  • PLA+ / PLA Pro
Nothing printed in it here yet

Toughened PLA — less brittle, better layer bonding, prints the same way.

  • PETG
Nothing printed in it here yet

Strong and slightly flexible, water- and chemical-resistant, handles moderate heat and outdoor use. Food-contact grades exist.

  • PCTG
Nothing printed in it here yet

A clearer, tougher cousin of PETG with better impact resistance and less stringing.

  • ABS
Nothing printed in it here yet

Tough and heat-resistant, sandable and smoothable with acetone. Warps easily; needs an enclosure and ventilation.

  • ASA
Nothing printed in it here yet

ABS with UV stability — the go-to for parts that live outdoors year-round.

  • TPU / TPE (flexible)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Rubber-like and stretchable, typically 85A–95A hardness. Phone cases, grips, gaskets, soles.

Engineering & high-performance filaments

  • Nylon (PA6 / PA12)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Very tough and wear-resistant with low friction — gears, hinges, living joints. Absorbs moisture and must be dried.

  • PC (Polycarbonate)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Extremely strong and impact-resistant, holds up above 110 °C, can be printed clear. Demanding to print.

  • PP (Polypropylene)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Light, chemically inert and fatigue-resistant — ideal for living hinges and containers. Notoriously prone to warping.

  • Carbon-fibre reinforced (PLA-CF, PETG-CF, PA-CF)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Chopped carbon fibre adds stiffness and dimensional stability with a matte finish. Abrasive — requires a hardened nozzle.

  • Glass-fibre reinforced (GF)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Similar stiffness gain to carbon fibre at lower cost, with better heat resistance. Also abrasive.

  • PEEK / PEKK
Nothing printed in it here yet

Aerospace-grade polymer: continuous use near 250 °C, chemically inert, sterilizable. Needs a high-temperature industrial printer.

  • PEI / ULTEM™
Nothing printed in it here yet

High strength and flame retardance with continuous use up to about 170 °C. Industrial machines only.

  • PVA (support)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Dissolves in plain water — a sacrificial support material, never part of the finished item.

  • HIPS (support)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Light and machinable; dissolves in limonene. Used as ABS support or as a material in its own right.

Decorative & specialty filaments

  • Silk PLA
Nothing printed in it here yet

High-gloss, almost metallic sheen that hides layer lines. Purely cosmetic — slightly weaker than plain PLA.

  • Matte PLA
Nothing printed in it here yet

Non-reflective, powdery finish that photographs cleanly and disguises imperfections.

  • Wood-filled
Nothing printed in it here yet

Real wood fibre blended into PLA — prints can be sanded, stained and sealed like timber.

  • Metal-filled (copper, bronze, steel)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Heavy metal powder in a PLA base; polishes to a genuine metallic look and can be patinated.

  • Marble / stone / ceramic-filled
Nothing printed in it here yet

Mineral particles create a speckled stone or ceramic texture for vases and homeware.

  • Glow-in-the-dark
Nothing printed in it here yet

Phosphorescent additive charges under light and glows in darkness. Abrasive — hardened nozzle recommended.

  • Glitter / galaxy / sparkle
Nothing printed in it here yet

Reflective flakes throughout the filament; the effect survives light scratches.

  • Colour-changing (thermochromic / UV-reactive)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Shifts colour with heat or sunlight — popular for novelty and gift items.

  • Rainbow / gradient / dual-colour
Nothing printed in it here yet

Colour transitions built into the spool, giving multicolour prints from a single extruder.

  • Transparent / translucent
Nothing printed in it here yet

Light-transmitting PETG or PC for lamps, lenses and light diffusers.

  • LW-PLA (foaming)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Expands as it extrudes to produce very light, low-density parts — RC aircraft, props, cosplay.

  • Conductive
Nothing printed in it here yet

Carbon-loaded plastic that carries a low current — touch sensors and simple embedded circuits.

  • Recycled / bio-based (rPETG, rPLA)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Made from reclaimed or renewable feedstock; a real selling point for eco-conscious buyers.

Resins (SLA / DLP / LCD)

  • Standard resin
Nothing printed in it here yet

Fine detail and a smooth surface at low cost — miniatures, figurines, display models. Brittle and UV-sensitive.

  • Tough / ABS-like resin
Nothing printed in it here yet

Absorbs impact instead of shattering — enclosures, snap fits, parts that get handled.

  • Water-washable resin
Nothing printed in it here yet

Cleans up with plain water instead of isopropyl alcohol — simpler and safer workflow.

  • Flexible / elastic resin
Nothing printed in it here yet

Cures to a rubber-like solid, roughly Shore 40A–80A — gaskets, grips, wearables.

  • Clear / transparent resin
Nothing printed in it here yet

Polishes to near-glass clarity for lenses, light guides and optical pieces.

  • Castable / wax resin
Nothing printed in it here yet

Burns out cleanly with almost no ash for investment casting — the standard for jewellery masters.

  • High-temperature resin
Nothing printed in it here yet

Holds shape well above 200 °C after post-curing — moulds, tooling, thermal fixtures.

  • Biocompatible / dental resin
Nothing printed in it here yet

Certified for skin or short-term oral contact — guides, aligners, wearables. Regulated use.

  • Ceramic / stone-filled resin
Nothing printed in it here yet

Mineral-loaded for a matte stone finish and higher stiffness.

Powder & metal

  • PA12 / Nylon 12 (SLS, MJF)
Nothing printed in it here yet

The workhorse powder: strong, dimensionally stable, no supports needed, equal strength in all directions.

  • PA11 / Nylon 11 (SLS)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Castor-oil based and bio-sourced, more ductile and impact-resistant than PA12 — orthotics and wearables.

  • Glass- or carbon-filled nylon powder
Nothing printed in it here yet

Reinforced grades with far greater stiffness and heat resistance for structural parts.

  • TPU powder (SLS)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Flexible lattices and energy-returning structures — footwear midsoles, padding, cushioning.

  • PP powder (SLS)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Chemically resistant and fatigue-tolerant — containers, ducts, hinges.

  • Stainless steel (316L, 17-4 PH)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Corrosion-resistant metal for functional hardware, tooling and jewellery.

  • Aluminium (AlSi10Mg)

Light metal with good thermal conductivity — brackets, housings, heat sinks.

  • Titanium (Ti6Al4V)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Exceptional strength-to-weight and biocompatibility — medical, aerospace, premium goods.

  • Precious & cast metals (bronze, brass, silver, gold)
Nothing printed in it here yet

Produced by casting from a printed castable pattern rather than printed directly.
