Print Request Rules
What you may ask makers to print, who sees what you post, and how a custom job is judged.
Last updated: 9 October 2026
A print request is a job you post for makers, the independent sellers on Threeprinted, to quote on. You describe what you want, and you can attach a model file and reference photos. Makers send quotes, you accept one, and you pay through the normal checkout. These rules are part of our Terms of Service, alongside our Acceptable Use Policy and Copyright Policy.
1. You need the right to have it printed
When you post a request, you confirm the following. We record that you did, when, and which version of this wording you saw.
I own this design, or I have the right to have it printed and to share its files with the makers who quote on it.
In practice:
- A design you made yourself is fine.
- A design by someone else needs their permission, both to be printed for you and for its files to be shared with makers. Check the licence: many free models are licensed for non-commercial use only, which may not allow someone to print them for you for money. If you are not sure, ask the designer.
- A file you bought on Threeprinted is never uploaded. Neither of our licences lets you share the file itself, and an upload shares it with every maker who can see the request. Choose it as a file you bought here instead (see below).
- Logos, trademarks and characters belong to their owners. A replica of a branded product is a counterfeit, whoever designed the file.
Having a file you bought here printed. Choose it in the request as a file you bought on Threeprinted, rather than uploading it. Makers quote from the file’s public page and never receive the file. Only the maker whose quote you accept receives it, through your order, to make that order and nothing else. You can choose a file only while your licence to it stands: not one that was refunded or whose licence ended. Instead of the confirmation above, you confirm:
I bought this file on Threeprinted and want it printed under my licence. Only the maker whose quote I accept will receive the file, and only to make this order.
Makers may decline any request, and we ask them to decline one that looks like someone else’s work. Anyone can report a request as infringing, and we remove the ones that are. Copyright owners can also use the notice process in our Copyright Policy.
2. What you cannot ask for
Everything our Acceptable Use Policy prohibits is prohibited here too, however it is described. In particular:
- firearms, and any part or accessory for one, including receivers, frames, magazines, suppressors, auto sears and conversion devices;
- weapons designed to injure;
- anything illegal to make, own or ship where it is made or where it is delivered;
- counterfeits: items bearing a brand, logo or trademark you are not authorised to use.
Every request is reviewed by our staff before makers can see it. We also check each request’s title, description and file names for terms linked to prohibited items, so the reviewer knows what to look at. A request that matches is not refused, and being checked is not an accusation: most requests are released unchanged. Makers can report a request, and we review every report.
3. Keep the job on Threeprinted
- Requests and quotes cannot contain links, website addresses, email addresses or phone numbers. A request or quote that does is refused when you post it.
- Until an order exists, you and the maker know each other only by username. The maker sees the region the item would ship to, to estimate shipping, but not your name or address. Once you accept a quote, the maker sees what any order shows them: the name and address the item ships to.
- Arranging the job or the payment outside Threeprinted breaks our Terms, and it takes away your refund protection.
4. Who sees your request
Every approved maker on Threeprinted can see an open request, including any model file and photos you attach, and can download them to prepare a quote. Do not upload anything confidential: no unreleased product designs, no files covered by a non-disclosure agreement, and no personal information in your photos.
Once released, a request stays open for 14 days, or until you accept a quote or withdraw it. Once it closes, only you, the maker whose quote you accepted, and our staff can see it.
Makers may use a request’s files only to quote on it and, if their quote is accepted, to make that order. They may not keep, share, sell or print them for anything else.
5. Quotes
- Each maker can send one quote per request: the price, the print time, and shipping from where they are. A quote stands for 7 days, and the maker can change or withdraw it until you accept it.
- Checkout works as it does for any order, with the same fees and the same refund protection.
6. The accepted quote is the specification
- The quote you accept records the material, colour, size, quantity and finish. That is what the maker agrees to make, and what you agree to buy.
- Before shipping, the maker photographs the finished item, and the photos are added to your order.
- If what arrives is materially different from the accepted quote, or is faulty, our Refund Policy covers you as it does any order, and your claim is judged against the quote and those photos. Custom work cannot be returned because you changed your mind.
7. When a request breaks these rules
We may hold or remove a request, close its quotes, cancel and refund an order made from it, and take the steps our Acceptable Use Policy sets out against the account. We act without warning where there is a risk to safety, a legal obligation, or clear bad faith.
Reporting a problem
Use Report on the request, or email support@threeprinted.com with a link to it and what is wrong.
